The teacher's task is not to talk, but to prepare and arrange a series of motives for cultural activity in a special environment made for the child.. -- Dr. Maria Montessori

REMOTE LEARNING DAYS

Next Monday and Tuesday (November 9th and 10th) will be REMOTE LEARNING DAYS for all out students. On Remote Learning Days there will be NO LIVE LESSONS.  All teachers will send assignments for students to work on through their learning platforms. Students must complete some assignments to be in attendance for the day.

BEGINNING OF THE YEAR TESTING

Our Beginning of the Year (BOG) Testing for all 3rd Graders will be offered on-campus the week of December 7-10th.  Please read the enclosed letter (link) and then complete this questionnaire (link) by FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 13th to let us know if your student will attend.

LIFETOUCH PICTURES RETAKE DAY

We have to RESCHEDULE our Lifetouch Retakes to Tuesday, November 17th from 10am-1pm.  We are still waiting for the rest of our order to ship from Lifetouch and it continues to be delayed. Please reschedule all 11/12 appointments using the link below.

If your student was absent for the previous Individual Picture Days or is in need of retakes, please plan to have this done on this day. These pictures will be used in the Yearbook!

Schedule an Appointment:  https://booknow.appointment-plus.com/cxhkghhs/

(Everyone must have an appointment, walk-ins not permitted)

If a portrait package was purchased & a retake is requested, this picture package must be given to the photographer on 11/17 for the retake. It is very helpful for the retake photographer to receive a note with the picture package explaining what changes are needed. Like with Fall Picture Days, families need to place their online order before Retake Day if their student is getting a picture taken for the first time. These orders need to be placed before the end of the day on 11/17 for orders to be shipped to the school. Orders placed after this time, will be shipped to your home for a fee.

ART IN CELEBRATION

Did you know that Sterling students have access to an Art Blog on their SeeSaw accounts?  This is an optional activity and with direction from our art teacher assistant, Samantha Falcoz-Vigne (see below), students of all ages are expressing their creativity and thoughts.  As Pablo Picasso once said, “Every child is an artist”.  Here are just a few samples for artists of ALL ages!

CULTURAL ARTS AFRICAN DRUMMING

image8.jpg

Ms. Sue Ann & Ms. Jennifer are excited to announce that our students are in for a musical treat, with a live virtual performance of African Drumming and Dancing.  This concert will occur on Thursday, November 19th.  Kindergarten and LE students are invited to attend the 1:00pm performance, and UE/MS students are invited to attend the 2:00pm performance.  Each concert should be approximately 45 minutes.

The Griot's Gourd is a musical performance with storytelling instruments made from gourds. Through both traditional and original melodies, dancing and singing, Shabutaso's modern-day griots make connections between Africa and the African Diaspora, including between West Africa and North Carolina.

DO YOU KNOW ABOUT INTERSESSIONS?

The beauty of a Montessori Middle School education is the introduction of INTERSESSIONS, which provide a time for students to do a deep-dive into an area of study over a number of days.  Sterling’s Middle School students started their “Travel in Place” Intersession Projects this week, through November 13th.  Their charge is to explore “How does what we know about community affect the way we view ourselves?”.  WIth teacher and parent guidance, students plan, organize, and execute a Walking Tour of their own community, and then take a tour of a fellow-student’s project.  They will have time for self-reflection, self-assessment, and self-reliance.  What a wonderful way to embody what Maria Montessori observed - “Adolescence is the time when the child enters in the state of adulthood and becomes a member of society."

STERLING’S FACULTY SPOTLIGHT

Samantha Falcoz-Vigna - Art Teacher Assistant

image11.png¨The human hand allows the mind to reveal itself. ~Maria Montessori

Art encourages imaginative thinking, creative problem-solving, and allows children to express themselves. Free expression is good for overall health and well-being. Giving your child a creative outlet can help relieve stress and work through things happening in their lives. By encouraging artistic expression, you can help facilitate learning. Each week Samantha posts a new art Activity to Seesaw for all 1st-6th grade, and Middle school art students (see samples above). Students choose which activities they would like to do and when, and share them via Seesaw. Art is totally by choice and just for fun, and children are encouraged to create or share any artwork anytime, whether it is an assigned activity or not. Each child has their own Art Journal in Seesaw that is ultimately a personal timeline of all their art activities from the entire school year. Here they can post their artwork, photos, audio, or video responses to Assignments, and get feedback from Samantha. Each child´s Journal stays totally private.

Art is a wonderful opportunity for children to connect with each other and the Sterling community. The C18 Virtual Art room is like an online art gallery for our school. The students choose if they want to share their work with the class or not. If you have not already, check it out with your student, there is already a bunch of student artwork!
