BLUEGRASS RESIDENCY

The music program is excited to announce that through the work of our PFA and the United Arts Council, Sterling will host a Bluegrass Residency during the week of October 5 - 9.  During that week, our K-6 students will have 2 classes with Mr. Charles Pettee.  Please note that students CAN and SHOULD attend BOTH music classes for next week!  Charles will be hosting exciting classes showcasing Bluegrass Music.  Students will learn about the style of music, composers and performers of Bluegrass, several instruments used in Bluegrass music, and have opportunities to sing along from home.

We hope your students will join both sessions for their class.  Zoom links and times will be going home through the classroom teachers.

You can watch a brief preview of Mr. Charles with the attached file (link)

GARDEN WEEK COMING UP!

image3.jpg

Please join us for Gardening Week to keep our campus looking beautiful! This year our gardening efforts will look a little different, but the result will be the same– - lovely spruced up gardens all over Sterling. Volunteers can sign up for time slots at specified gardens from Monday, October 12th through Sunday, October 18th HERE.  Please note that any pavers or fencing will need to be done by Todd/Facilities so that they match and meet regulations.  Also, garden boxes need to be wood, not plastic.  Thanks!

If you can’t make it at the specified times, you can review the desired donations and consider purchasing a requested item. If you arrive for your designated time, and your task has been completed, there will be a list of additional tasks taped to the main office door. Feel free to contact nicolemkumar@gmail.com with any questions. Thank you to all that have already signed up!!  Happy weeding and planting!

Sterling’s Parent Faculty Association (PFA) is still seeking volunteers for other community projects.  Please complete this survey and get involved!

Ellie Shameli - Children’s House PRL Teacher

“I’ve been an educator for almost 30 years. Teaching is not my job, it’s my passion and that’s what I live for.  Three years ago my husband and I had an opportunity to move here to be closer to my three beautiful grandchildren, students of Sterling for many years. My first “real life” exposure to Montessori was through watching my grandchildren and seeing first hand how differently they approached new experiences, how they interacted with adults, and how they loved to explore.  I could see how valuable the Montessori method is to a young child.  I was able to see how this child-centered approach to education fosters confident, enthusiastic and self-directed children.  I wanted to be a part of this magic. An Assistant opportunity in Children’s House became available and I applied.  That first year showed me how a Montessori education shapes a young person.  25 children working purposefully and independently with hands on materials, just like mini scientists, comparing, contrasting, deciding, exploring and learning. Children’s House is the foundation.

When COVID happened and the pause button was pushed, the world froze.  I am a person who finds the silver lining in everything and instead of looking at this pandemic as a negative I spent my energy finding all of the positives that would come out of our unprecedented circumstances.   In July I was faced with another opportunity, an opportunity to pilot a Preschool Remote Learning (PRL) class.  Sterling was not going to just offer a Remote option for preschoolers, we were going to offer a MONTESSORI preschool experience.  I am proud and honored to be the lead teacher of this PRL class. I work hard planning Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Art, Music, Math, Geography and Science lessons for the children. Even though we are remote and interacting through a camera the children and families in my class are connected and building the necessary trust and partnership that supports the social, emotional and academic growth in each child. This experience has been the most amazing experience of my life, and it’s proof that, “The child brings us great hope and a new vision.” -Maria Montessori.
